This is an example of how things go wrong w an ex racehorse.
Boarded at a professional barn.
Owner had lessons w a trainer
Family is not lacking in funds to support the horse- money not an issue
They hired another trainer to try and sort things out so they could sell the horse.
He got worse
He came to us in this physical condition – the trainer had been riding him like this- in the hot summer w a poorly fitted western saddle – look at that spine sticking out and lack of muscle to carry this larger trainer
At least once the horse was ridden this way for a good part of the day out in the cow fields
The second picture is of the same horse a few months later.
It might initially seem like this post is a shame on them but look how great we are post. It’s not that at all. All of the people involved w this horse just didn’t know.
He wasn’t fed properly. That is so common for Thoroughbreds And while at a boarding area was kept on his own away from the other horses. No friends and no play at all. Everyone involved felt he was well taken care of and instead of seeing his anguish, and improving things for him- it was time to simply pass him on. They didn’t really know what else to do This is so common
He spent his days pacing and worried. Then they called a rescue – us – to come get him. So we did (They had listed him for sale for quite some time)
We got him plenty of quality hay- as much as he wanted- and he turned out w friends to run and play. When his body was ready we put him in w our girls Comprehensive Riding Program. He flourished
If you are having a hard time w your ex racehorse- we are happy to offer a free evaluation
These posts can seem judgy. People love their horses and sure don’t intentionally do this. But often they don’t know. The training or boarding places don’t know and it’s a cycle of spiraling downhill
And often rescues are such great sources of information. Not just us! They see the same issues over and over. If you can nip these things in the bud most everyone’s happy. Especially your horse!
If you have a daughter looking to be a horsewoman, not just a rider- check out our Sat program They helped this horse and many horses get over a variety of human caused issues. It’s so rewarding!
