Starting and Running a Rescue

Join us for a class on Sat Sept 2, 2023
What it really entails, how to go about it, what its really like, how to get a mentor!
So if you think about running a rescue you would be surprised and maybe shocked how much of your time is spent communicating with people

It’s a significant part of the “job”

Sometimes it’s really straightforward like scheduling the vet or scheduling the farrier. But often times it might be someone inquiring about a class or adoption or volunteer position. A social media post, an intake request, an event or class. Update and maintain the webpage, adoption contracts, owner surrender contracts, insurance. Yikes!

The big rescues have employees. Often many. But there are many small rescues out there. Started by a person who just wanted to make a difference. And as they grow these “office” type tasks grow tenfold.

Much thought goes into what you say and how you say it. Sometimes taking 24 hours or more and various drafts before hitting send or post. It’s often ongoing as I sat this Sunday morning at 7 am trying to catch up. Most of your communications are pleasant, but not all, so you have to prepare for that. People who are angry about something else will take it out on you personally.

Either way this adds a lot of clutter to your brain. A lot of screen time as we learn this is not healthy for us. The moments that you used to have to spend some quality time with the horses disappears. Other people may be taking on that responsibility so the horses are cared for but the reason you started the rescue wasn’t so you could stay in an office but that often ends up being the case. Someone has to do it.

If you are interested in starting a rescue, we have a course coming up that will be great to get you started. I’ve learned a lot over the past 11 years. There was a lot I didn’t know. Ways I could have done better had I had a mentor. We would love to be this for you. The good and the bad is all part of the journey but it’s like every rescue has to reinvent the wheel. Learning with a mentor is a great way to avoid some of the pitfalls and misconceptions
